Wiesbaden, 25 August 2026
The German economy grew noticeably more strongly in the spring of 2026 than in the previous quarters, according to preliminary figures from the Federal Statistical Office, while the deficit of the public budgets reached 3.1 percent of economic output in the first half of the year.
The Federal Statistical Office presented initial calculations on economic output in the spring on Tuesday in Wiesbaden. According to these figures, gross domestic product (GDP) – that is, the total value of all goods and services produced in a country – increased more sharply between April and June than in the weak quarters before. According to Ruth Brand, who heads the Office, this is a sign that the economy is picking up again. Economic activity means: how well or poorly the economy is currently doing.
