German Exports Reach New Record High in June 2026

The People's Republic of China remains one of the most important individual buyer countries for German products. The Middle Kingdom was able to launch several domestic economic stimulus programs in recent months, aimed primarily at boosting investment in industrial equipment and infrastructure. German mechanical engineering and plant manufacturers benefited disproportionately from this.

Brexit Effect and US Demand Support Exports

Exports to EU countries also increased significantly. According to Destatis, this was reflected in both deliveries of capital goods and consumer goods. The close integration of German industry with European neighboring countries is evident in the current figures, the statisticians explained.

At the same time, the export economy benefited from growing demand from the United Kingdom. Following the end of the Brexit transition period, trade with the United Kingdom has gradually stabilized over the past quarters, according to the authority. Deliveries to the USA also picked up, supported by robust investment activity among American companies.

Economist Sees Signal for Resilience

Economist Thomas Gitzel sees the record figure as a signal for the resilience of German foreign trade. The German export sector has held its own in a difficult global environment and opened up new sales markets, he said. The broad distribution across several regions reduces dependence on individual buyer countries.

Gitzel also pointed out that calendar- and seasonally-adjusted monthly figures better reflect the underlying economic trend than nominal comparison figures. Fluctuations due to the number of working days or seasonal effects are eliminated in this way. The June figure therefore provides a particularly meaningful picture of export dynamics.

Risks Remain

Despite the record, global uncertainty remains a risk factor. Trade disputes, possible tariff adjustments, and economic developments in China could weigh on exports in the coming months. The statisticians intend to monitor developments more closely in the upcoming monthly reports.

Overall, economists assess the increase as confirmation that the German export economy has noticeably recovered following a phase of weak orders at the beginning of the year. If the dynamic continues, industry could prove to be a pillar supporting the economy as a whole. Destatis will publish the final foreign trade figures for June at the end of the month.
