The German Farmers' Association expects an overall average grain harvest this year while seeing agriculture under growing pressure amid drought, heat, and rising costs.

In the morning at 10:30 a.m., Farmers' President Joachim Rukwied reported on harvest expectations at a field in Rangsdorf-Groß Machnow in Brandenburg, south of Berlin. „Der Deutsche Bauernverband geht insgesamt von einer durchschnittlichen Getreideernte aus“, the association stated. The first combine harvesters are rolling into the grain fields these days; the harvest season has thus reached its peak throughout Germany.

According to the association, the area cultivated with grain stands at 6.03 million hectares, slightly above the previous year's figure of 5.92 million hectares. Despite the large area, farmers view the current harvest with concern. Rukwied warned that the spring drought and heat stress „geben Anlass zur Sorge was Menge und Qualität der diesjährigen Ernte angeht". Starting at temperatures of 27 degrees Celsius, the grain switches into a self-protection mode, he explained: „Es gibt dann Qualitätseinbußen und kleinere Körner. Das heißt am Ende weniger Ertrag."
