Gust of wind catches caravan

At that exact moment, a strong gust of wind also caught the caravan of a 55-year-old car driver from the Innsbruck district. The caravan spun around its own axis and collided head-on with the parked car of the 30-year-old.

In the collision, he was struck on the body by parts of the caravan and knocked to the ground. After the emergency services arrived, he collected nearby motorcycle parts and then went to the passenger side of his vehicle.

The 30-year-old was given initial treatment by two first responders and subsequently taken by ambulance, presumably with serious injuries, to the BKH Lienz hospital. The other occupants of the vehicles were uninjured in the traffic accident.

Weather situation and emergency services

Also deployed were 25 members of the voluntary fire brigades of Oberdrauburg and Simmerlach. The B100 was closed to all traffic until 7 p.m.

The background to the accident was, according to police, a cold front that brought severe thunderstorms with heavy rain, hail and gusty winds to Carinthia on Wednesday. The Spittal an der Drau district, through which the B100 runs, was also affected.

Sequence of the accident

As the emergency services further reported, the entire incident occurred in late afternoon within a short period of time: first the motorcyclist was caught by the wind, then the 30-year-old provided assistance and finally ended up himself in the area of the violent gusts that swept the caravan along.

The Carinthia police published the information in a press release on Wednesday evening. The 60-year-old motorcyclist, to whom the 30-year-old had rushed to help, apparently survived the fall without serious consequences according to current findings.
