Medical specialists in Germany are resisting a proposed mandatory referral system, warning it undermines patient care quality and medical expertise.
Opposition to "Gatekeeping" System
The debate centers on a so-called "gatekeeping" model, where patients would need a referral from a general practitioner before accessing specialist care. Critics argue this approach prioritizes cost containment over medical necessity. "Man sagt: Steuerung und Patientenlenkung," one source noted, suggesting the system focuses more on directing patients than ensuring quality care.
Florian Mittermayer, president of a medical association, warned: "Auf Qualitätssicherung mit medizinischer Expertise wird bei der Debatte um Zuweisungszwang und Gatekeeping nicht vorrangig Rücksicht genommen." His statement reflects broader concerns that the reform sidelines specialist knowledge in favor of bureaucratic controls.
