Germany's producer price index climbed more than economists had forecast in July, according to data published by the Federal Statistical Office and analysed by market participants.

The figures, released by Destatis, point to a renewed build-up of cost pressure at the upstream stages of the German economy, just as policymakers and central bankers elsewhere continue to weigh the trajectory of inflation. Producer prices capture the prices that manufacturers and wholesalers charge each other, and tend to feed into consumer prices with a lag.

Alexander Krüger, chief economist at Bankhaus Bethmann, said inflationary pressures had become uncomfortable at the early stages of the price chain. "Auf den Vorstufen des Inflationsauftriebs ist es schlagartig ungemütlich geworden," he said, pointing to a shift in momentum that he argued deserved close attention.
