The Deutscher Philologenverband, the union representing secondary school teachers in Germany, requested this Monday that the country's 16 federal states not set the start of summer holidays before the first weekend of July to protect the Abitur exam deadlines.
"Ein Sommerferienbeginn vor dem ersten Wochenende im Juli verkürzt die Prüfungszeitfenster mit deutlichen Konsequenzen," Susanne Lin-Kitzing, president of the Deutscher Philologenverband, told the German Press Agency (dpa). The union leader argued that the preparation, administration, and grading deadlines for the final Abitur exams are compromised when the school break starts too early.
In its statement, the union explained that when holidays begin before that date, teachers must complete the grading of exams and handle any potential make-up tests in an even more compressed period. This situation, the organization warned, increases pressure on both students and teachers, who have less time to close the school year before the break.
