The president of the German Teachers' Association, Heinz-Peter Meidinger, has warned against a devaluation of the Abitur due to the increasing number of top-grade certificates and has called for a nationally uniform Abitur.
Heinz-Peter Meidinger sees the high number of top grades as a serious problem for the meaningfulness of Germany's highest school-leaving qualification. In an interview with the Mediengruppe Bayern, he said it is becoming increasingly difficult to identify the truly top-performing students in the "flood of top grades." The result is a gradual devaluation of the Abitur and of general university entrance examinations.
This development is already becoming evident in concrete examples: Even a Bavarian 1.0 Abitur is no longer sufficient to reliably secure a place in medical studies through the academic performance track, Meidinger explained. As a result, it is precisely the highest-achieving students who come under pressure because their outstanding performances are hardly visible within the mass of top grades.
