Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) and Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced on Thursday in Berlin that they would push ahead with the construction of a hydrogen pipeline between Germany and Algeria.
At a joint press conference in Berlin, Merz and Tebboune spoke about the project, which according to both sides is to be considered a joint major project. Tebboune described the so-called "southern H2 corridor" as a "Leuchtturmprojekt, welches eine wichtige Rolle für erneuerbare Energien und deren Ausbau spielt". The goal of the project is to enable future hydrogen imports via pipeline from Algeria and Tunisia to Italy, Austria, and Germany.
According to Merz, Germany will not be acting alone. "Gemeinsam mit Italien werde an dem Projekt gearbeitet", said the Federal Chancellor. Italy is thus integrated as a third partner into the project, which is intended to prospectively secure energy transport across the Mediterranean to Central Europe.
