The starting position ahead of the clash with the South American underdog is anything but comfortable for Julian Nagelsmann's squad. Following the 1:2 defeat against Ecuador in the final group match, Germany heads into the first knockout round of a major tournament since the title win in Rio de Janeiro twelve years ago in a subdued mood. "We know that we now have the knife at our throat in the knockout matches," said DFB managing director Andreas Rettig in an interview with MagentaTV.
