Berlin, April 24, 2026 Berlin’s Culture Senator Sarah Wedl-Wilson has requested her dismissal following allegations of improper influence over funding decisions for politically significant projects. The controversy centers on 13 projects slated for 2025, totaling approximately €2.6 million, which were allocated from a budget earmarked for "projects of special political significance" by Berlin’s cultural administration. Wedl-Wilson, who was appointed in May 2025, served less than a year in office before stepping down.

The projects in question were part of a larger list of 18 initiatives that had garnered strong support from Berlin’s CDU parliamentary group. Critics from the Left and Green parties accused Wedl-Wilson and her predecessor, Joe Chialo (CDU), who resigned in May 2025, of yielding to undue pressure from CDU lawmakers.

Allegations of Political Influence

Opposition parties have raised concerns about the transparency of the funding process. The Left and Greens allege that Wedl-Wilson and Chialo allowed political considerations to override impartial decision-making. The Berliner Landesrechnungshof (Berlin State Audit Office) has not yet commented on whether it will investigate the claims.

Wedl-Wilson, who was born in the UK, took office amid high expectations for her leadership in Berlin’s cultural sector. Her brief tenure, however, has been overshadowed by the funding dispute. The CDU has defended the projects, arguing they align with the city’s cultural and political priorities.
