Giant Trump balloon installation to be displayed at protest during US president's Ireland visit

The protest is being coordinated by a coalition of Irish civil society groups who have obtained permission to demonstrate along the planned motorcade route between Dublin city centre and the US ambassador's residence in Phoenix Park. Gardaí have been notified of the demonstration and traffic diversions are expected throughout the morning.

Visit agenda and bilateral talks

Trump is scheduled to arrive in Ireland for a two-day visit that will combine official meetings with a stop at his golf resort in Doonbeg, County Clare. He is expected to meet Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin at Farmleigh House to discuss bilateral trade, Northern Ireland's post-Brexit trading arrangements and ongoing cooperation on technology and energy sectors.

The balloon, which first appeared over London during Trump's 2018 visit to the United Kingdom, has been borrowed from a group of British activists who loaned it to their Irish counterparts for the duration of the visit. Protest organisers said they expect several thousand people to attend the demonstration, with additional smaller rallies planned in Galway, Cork and Louth.

Diplomatic and security preparations

The US embassy in Dublin has declined to comment on the planned protest. A spokesperson for the Department of the Taoiseach confirmed that the visit would proceed as scheduled and that security arrangements were the responsibility of the Garda Síochána and US Secret Service personnel attached to the presidential delegation.

Donald Trump Jr. and other members of the Trump family are expected to travel with the president. The White House has not yet released a detailed itinerary, but officials in Doonbeg said preparations at the Trump International Golf Links and Hotel were already under way, including the construction of temporary security perimeters around the property.

Domestic reaction and human rights concerns

Local businesses in Doonbeg have reported a mixed reaction to the visit. While some hoteliers and restaurateurs said the presidential visit typically generated significant media exposure and bookings, others expressed concern about potential disruption and the political signal sent by hosting the US president at a time of strained transatlantic relations.

Human rights organisations have called on the Irish government to raise specific concerns during the bilateral meeting, including US policy on immigration, climate commitments under the Paris Agreement and the treatment of journalists. Amnesty International Ireland said it would deliver a petition to Farmleigh House calling on the Taoiseach to press the US president on rule-of-law issues.

The visit comes amid renewed debate in the Republic of Ireland about the country's traditional neutrality and its security relationship with the United States. Several opposition TDs have used the visit to call for a public debate on whether Ireland should maintain its policy of military neutrality given the war in Ukraine and shifting US foreign policy priorities.
