Girondins Bordeaux demoted to sixth division by financial watchdog

The DNCG, founded in 1984 to audit and monitor French professional football clubs, had initially imposed an exclusion from all national leagues as part of its decision. A sporting resumption would be possible only in the sixth-tier R1 at best. However, this would require the approval of the football association of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region.

DNCG: Strict guardian of club finances

The acute funding need amounts to around ten million euros according to the club's reports. The background to this is outstanding transfer payments and training compensation owed to other clubs. These obligations could recently not be met, further worsening the club's financial precarious situation.

A short-term way out had seemed to emerge through the British investment fund Sparta Capital. „Ein Verkauf an den britischen Investmentfonds Sparta Capital scheiterte zuletzt." Subsequently, another investor was sought. „Die Suche nach einem anderen Investor blieb ebenfalls erfolglos."

Failed investors and Kahn's talks

Last year, former German national goalkeeper Oliver Kahn had held talks about a possible stake in Girondins Bordeaux, which also did not lead to an agreement. With that, the last known rescue attempts for the club fell apart.

The appeals commission also stated that, given the club's financial problems, liquidation was now even on the table. „Wegen der Finanzprobleme steht mittlerweile aber sogar die Liquidation des Vereins im Raum. Darüber muss nun ein Handelsgericht entscheiden." This brings a possible definitive end of the traditional club within reach.

Liquidation as the final step

Historically, the club had certainly proven its stature in European football. In the 1980s, German internationals such as Klaus Allofs, Manfred Kaltz, Uwe Reinders and Dieter Müller played for Girondins. With FC Bayern Munich, Oliver Kahn decided both legs of the 1996 UEFA Cup final against Bordeaux 2-0 and 3-1 in his team's favor, contributing to one of the darker chapters in the club's history.

For the fans and the city of Bordeaux, the decision marks another low point after the crash from the second division two years ago. The club, which once helped shape the French football establishment, now stands on the brink of dissolution. Should the commercial court order liquidation, a fresh start even in the R1 league would hardly be possible.

The sporting structures that once produced world-class players have largely been dismantled. A return to the former sporting level appears practically impossible under the given circumstances, even if a fresh start in the sixth division were to succeed.

The coming weeks will show whether the commercial court opens a path to restructuring or initiates liquidation. Until then, the future of the six-time French champions remains hanging in the balance.
