The Aargau SVP National Councillor Andreas Glarner is stepping down as a National Councillor and as President of SVP Aargau.
The decision comes in light of an internal party rule: Anyone who is 63 years old on election day or reaches 16 years of service in a cantonal executive by the end of the legislative period must, according to the statutes of SVP Aargau, secure two-thirds of the votes in both the cantonal executive and at the party congress.
Glarner was unable to clear this hurdle across all factions following internal party discussions. As a result, his mandate as President of the cantonal party is de facto no longer extendable; he himself is withdrawing the basis for remaining in the National Council, according to word from his circle.
