Graz, 28 June 2026

In Graz, the municipal council election takes place on Sunday, at which incumbent mayor Elke Kahr of the KPÖ wants to defend the power base she captured in 2021, while the ÖVP, SPÖ, and Greens are battling for a path into a future city government.

The starting position ahead of the Graz municipal council election is unusual: A communist party provides the mayor of a state capital in the form of Elke Kahr, after the KPÖ had made worldwide headlines in 2021 with 28.8 percent. Polls currently credit the KPÖ with up to 36 percent, even if the figures fluctuate depending on the survey. The party thus once again lies clearly ahead of all competitors, but the outcome of the election is still considered open, because majorities in the city senate can only be formed through coalitions.
