Graz, June 29, 2026
In Graz on Sunday, all 111 polling stations opened for the election of a new municipal council, while surveys predict first place for incumbent Elke Kahr (KPÖ) and the number of postal votes issued is significantly higher than in 2021.
After the polling stations opened at 7:00 a.m. — at temperatures of around 22 degrees Celsius — 225,883 eligible voters decided on Sunday between eleven parties and lists on the composition of the new Graz municipal council. As the available data shows, the number of eligible voters has thus risen slightly: in 2021, 223,512 people were still eligible to vote.
A clear trend is visible in the postal votes. By Friday noon, according to the city, 39,511 absentee ballot documents had been issued — an increase from 25,430 at the comparable point in 2021. All postal votes received by Friday are to be counted on Sunday; the final result will not be available until Monday afternoon, as some of the postal votes will not be counted until Monday.
