Graz, 28 June 2026
In Graz on Sunday, all 111 polling stations opened for the election of a new municipal council, in which incumbent Elke Kahr (KPÖ) can hope for a second term as mayor according to polls.
In the 2021 election, the KPÖ had surprisingly taken first place and entered a coalition with the Greens. Since then, the city has been governed by a communist-green coalition that attracted attention primarily with affordable housing and unspectacular "caring" politics. According to reports, outside visitors were also interested in how Graz organizes affordable housing.
For today's election, 225,883 people are eligible to vote, around 2,000 more than in 2021. They can choose between eleven parties and lists. By Friday noon, 39,511 absentee ballots had already been issued, significantly more than the 25,430 in 2021. A first projection is expected at 5:00 PM.
