A research team at the University of Graz, led by lipid researcher Andreas Koeberle, has presented long-chain vitamin E breakdown products as candidates for a novel therapy for chronic inflammation.
According to the study, chronic inflammation is linked to a broad range of diseases, including arterial calcification, heart failure, insulin resistance, and neuropathies. Until now, therapies have mainly aimed to block the progression of inflammation, Koeberle explained. „Therapien zielen meistens darauf ab, das Fortschreiten der Inflammation zu blockieren. Für eine langfristige Heilung muss sie aber vollständig aufgelöst werden“, the researcher said.
Koeberle has headed the Pharmacognosy division at the Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Graz since 2024 and, according to his own statements, is working on developing new therapeutic approaches using plant-based active compounds. His team specifically searched for substances that have an anti-inflammatory effect while also being able to resolve an existing inflammation. „Aktuell fehlt es aber an Medikamenten, die beide Effekte gezielt kombinieren können“, according to the university's press release.
