A study by the University of Graz shows that ants with a fungal infection selectively consume caffeinated food and thereby remain active longer.
Researchers from the University of Graz and the University of Oulu in Finland investigated in the laboratory how ants respond to caffeine when they are infected with a fungus. The result: the animals preferentially ate food with a caffeine concentration of 100 milligrams per kilogram – a dose roughly equivalent to one tenth of the caffeine in an espresso. Healthy ants, by contrast, avoided the caffeine.
The effect was clear: "We found that caffeine slowed the growth of the fungus. That could have a positive effect on the health of the animals," reports Danae Nyckees, a doctoral student at the Graz Institute of Biology. Infected ants fed with caffeine remained active longer, and mortality was delayed.
