Fast-Growing Acropora Corals

The fast-growing Acropora corals, considered the framework builders of the reef, showed particularly clear regeneration in the affected regions. This coral species is sensitive to heat stress, but recovers comparatively quickly after favorable conditions.

The central reef sections, where the increase was somewhat smaller than in the north, are regarded by researchers as regions with high biodiversity. According to AIMS, this is where it will be decided how resilient the entire ecosystem will be in surviving future summers.

The reef rescue authorities and conservation organizations assess the figures as confirmation that local measures — such as controlling crown-of-thorns starfish and reducing land-based runoff — can be effective. At the same time, they are calling for long-term global climate targets to limit heat waves.
