Marine Biologists Warn of Possible Ecosystem Collapse at the Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef stretches over 2,300 kilometers along the northeastern coast of Australia and consists of 2,500 individual reefs. It is considered the largest living structure in the world, hosts a unique array of animal and plant life, and ranks among the country's top tourist attractions.

Last year, coral bleaching had already reached a record scale, triggered by above-average water temperatures. According to the available information, last year's bleaching was the sixth mass bleaching event since 2016. Corals bleach when they expel the colorful algae living within them as a survival mechanism; if temperatures remain high, the corals die.

El Niño as an Accelerant

For the current year, experts are expecting an El Niño event that could set records in its overall strength. El Niño is a naturally occurring climate phenomenon that warms the ocean surface in the eastern and central Pacific along the equator, typically occurs every two to seven years, and lasts nine to twelve months. The phenomenon influences wind, air pressure, and precipitation worldwide and increases the risk of weather extremes.

Pratchett's warning about an extreme El Niño was delivered at the symposium in Auckland. At the same conference, Ove Hoegh-Guldberg, Professor of Marine Studies at the University of Queensland, also spoke, comparing the situation to the sinking of the Titanic: "Dies könnte der Vorbote des Untergangs der Menschheit sein" and "Das Schiff fängt wirklich ganz eindeutig an zu sinken und wir sehen es nicht".

In addition to rising water temperatures, experts identify further stressors for the reef: extreme weather events, wastewater discharges into the sea, coastal development, and the proliferation of the crown-of-thorns starfish, which feeds on corals. These factors place additional pressure on the reef.

UNESCO and Politics Under Pressure

In the month this article was published, the Great Barrier Reef narrowly escaped being classified as "in danger" by UNESCO. The UN organization has been monitoring the World Heritage Site since 2021 and had warned at the time about placing it on the list of World Heritage Sites "in danger". According to the available information, the United Nations expressed its "extreme Besorgnis" about the mass bleaching and the consequences of climate change for the reef.

Speaking in Auckland, Hoegh-Guldberg warned that the failure of governments to act endangers the future of coral reefs worldwide. He thus linked the warning about the collapse of an iconic ecosystem with a fundamental political critique.

UNESCO has been monitoring developments at the Great Barrier Reef since 2021. That year, the organization apparently decided narrowly against downgrading the site to the "in danger" category; at the same time, it is maintaining its monitoring, responding to the ongoing bleaching events.

What Lies Ahead for the Reef

Overall, the researchers' statements paint a picture of a reef under a clustering of stressors. According to the experts' assessment, the combination of a record-breaking El Niño, elevated water temperatures, and persistent human influences could trigger a bleaching event in the coming months whose consequences for the entire ecosystem are barely foreseeable.

In the coming months, water temperatures in the Coral Sea will be regarded as a decisive indicator. Should the forecast El Niño event materialize and prove strong, Pratchett's assessment suggests that another, possibly unprecedented mass bleaching is to be expected, putting the reef's long-term viability in question.
