Copenhagen, September 24, 2026

The USA and Denmark will sign an agreement on Greenland on Tuesday, intended to reshape future cooperation on the world's largest island.

The signing is scheduled for Tuesday and marks the provisional conclusion of months of negotiations between Washington and Copenhagen over the status of the strategically significant Arctic island in the North Atlantic. Greenland, which has been an equal part of the Kingdom of Denmark since 1953, had become the subject of geopolitical tensions in recent months.

The full contents of the treaty had not yet been made public by Wednesday, but according to both sides it is to encompass economic cooperation, scientific collaboration, and security-policy consultations. Greenland's new Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen had emphasized in recent weeks that any agreement had to respect the interests of the Greenlandic population.
