The USA has concluded an agreement with the Kingdom of Denmark that grants Washington a central role in Greenland's security in the future, as Lars Løkke Rasmussen confirmed.

The agreement provides for the United States to assume security policy responsibilities on the world's largest island in coordination with the Danish authorities. Rasmussen explained that the agreement was intended to strengthen security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic, thereby also serving shared security within NATO and in Europe.

Greenland, which has been an equal part of the Kingdom of Denmark since 1953, had repeatedly become the subject of security policy debates in recent years. The island lies strategically between North America and Europe and is gaining additional significance in view of global warming and new shipping routes. In addition, there are rich deposits of rare earths and other raw materials that attract the interest of external powers.
