Greens and ÖVP in Vienna demand audit of Summer City Camps

Background to the criticism

Green mandatary Sabine Keri put the concerns particularly pointedly and referred to comparable offerings on the market. She indicated that private providers can deliver comparable services at significantly more favorable conditions. From this observation, she derived her demand for an independent review.

Keri announced that she intends to file a corresponding audit request with the City Court of Audit. The aim is a comprehensive investigation of the procedures, the use of funds, and the number of places. The result is to serve as a basis for future reforms.

The Vienna People's Party essentially joined the criticism and emphasized in turn the need for a better distribution of the existing capacities. From the ÖVP's perspective as well, it must be ensured that families can actually choose between different offerings and are not tied to specific locations or providers.

Positions of the parties

A key point of contention remains the question of how many places are actually needed and in which districts there are gaps. Margareten and other Viennese districts play a role in the debate, as the supply situation is particularly visible there.

The City of Vienna defends its summer childcare program as an important component of municipal family policy and regularly points to the high utilization of the camps. At the same time, the city government emphasizes that the offerings are continuously evaluated and adapted to demand.

The opposition, however, insists that an external audit is necessary in order to obtain clarity about the actual efficiency of the programs. The City Court of Audit in Vienna regularly reviews municipal institutions and can act on application by the opposition or on its own initiative.

Next steps and audit request

In the coming weeks, the formal audit request is expected to be submitted and the responsible committees to address the matter. Until then, the debate over the Summer City Camps remains a central issue in Viennese family policy.

ÖVP mandatary Felix Stadler supported the demand and emphasized the importance of a sound data basis. Only on the basis of audited figures can a meaningful discussion be held about the future direction of summer childcare, he argued before the Vienna City Council.

Both opposition factions announced that they will continue to address the issue in the upcoming sessions of the City Council and the responsible committees. Families whose children are cared for in the camps are likely to follow the developments with particular interest.
