Vienna, October 22, 2026

The trial concerning Günther Paal and Gunkl began on Thursday in Vienna before the Vienna Regional Court, amid considerable media interest.

At the start of the proceedings, the court asked for restraint. The presiding judge stated that reactions in the courtroom were not desired. He said verbatim: “Signs of disapproval and applause” were “not welcome.”

According to the information in the case materials provided to the court, Paal is accused of having handed Gunkl a total of €159,000 in envelopes during several meetings. The alleged handovers are said to have taken place by May 2026 and, in some cases, at publicly accessible locations.

Charges and indications of handovers

Examples of such locations include a sports shop, a café, and railway stations, or transport hubs in the broader sense. This means that the handovers are said to have taken place not exclusively in private, but at least partly in public.
