Schottwien, 21 July 2026

A gust of wind triggered a fatal workplace accident on Monday morning at the Semmering Base Tunnel construction site in Göstritz near Schottwien (Neunkirchen district, Lower Austria), killing a 45-year-old Croatian worker and seriously injuring a 54-year-old colleague from Carinthia.

At the Semmering Base Tunnel construction site, a fatal workplace accident occurred on Monday, 20 July 2026, during the late morning hours. According to police, the incident took place at around 10:55 a.m. during dismantling work in the so-called workshop in Göstritz, municipality of Schottwien.

Two workers – both from the Spittal an der Drau district in Carinthia and employees of a contracted (sub-)company – were working from an aerial work platform. According to police, during the dismantling of a hall, a wall along with its supports fell onto the basket of an aerial work platform – on which the two workers were standing. A gust of wind is presumed to have been the trigger, apparently catching the unstable construction and causing it to collapse.
