Hannover–Berlin rail disruption eases after overhead line theft investigation

What happened overnight

The trigger for the disruption was an overhead-line fault near the Karl-Wiechert-Allee stop in Hannover, where roughly 100 meters of contact wire was damaged. During the night leading into Thursday, a pantograph on an ICE train tore off in the section where parts were later found to be missing, and the train had to stop. Approximately 200 passengers were evacuated from the stricken train.

Deutsche Bahn has pointed to theft as the likely cause. "Zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt müssen wir von einem Diebstahl von Mastankern ausgehen," a spokesperson said, referring to the metal anchors that secure overhead-line masts to the ground. The company has not yet said how many anchors are missing or when they were taken. "Auf einem Gleis sind die Reparaturen bereits beendet," the spokesperson added, confirming the partial repair.

Police probe suspected theft

The Bundespolizei has opened an investigation into suspected aggravated theft and dangerous interference with rail traffic, but has stopped short of confirming Deutsche Bahn's theft theory in the same terms. Asked by NDR Niedersachsen, a federal police spokesperson would only speak of indications that metal had been removed from a ground anchoring. "Anhaltspunkten, die im Endeffekt nahelegen, dass Metall aus einer Erdverankerung gestohlen wurde," the spokesperson said, indicating the inquiry was still in its early stages.

The fallout spread well beyond Hannover. Deutsche Bahn listed multiple long-distance routes affected by the closure, including the Aachen – Mönchengladbach – Köln / Düsseldorf – Hannover – Berlin service, the Flensburg – Hamburg – Frankfurt (M) – Frankfurt (M) Flughafen Regionalbahnhof connection, the Oberstdorf – Stuttgart – Mannheim – Mainz – Köln – Dortmund – Hannover – Magdeburg – Leipzig – Dresden line, the Norddeich Mole – Emden – Bremen – Hannover – Magdeburg – Leipzig – Dresden trains, and the Berlin – Hannover – Osnabrück – Bad Bentheim – Amsterdam service.

Long-distance routes caught up in delays

S-Bahn services in the Hannover region were also caught up in the delays, as were regional trains bound for Berlin and intermediate cities such as Wolfsburg and Stendal. Deutsche Bahn did not give a precise estimate for when full service would resume, saying only that work on the second track was being pushed ahead as quickly as possible given the complexity of the overhead-line repair.

The damaged section lies east of Hannover Hauptbahnhof in an area that also serves freight traffic, raising the prospect of knock-on effects on cargo operators using the corridor. Deutsche Bahn did not address freight impact in its public statements but said the passenger information pages on its website carried the latest connection data.

Investigators will be looking at how mast anchors could have been removed without immediate detection and whether other infrastructure along the line shows signs of similar tampering. The combination of a deliberate act and a high-speed consequence — a torn pantograph and an emergency evacuation — has drawn attention to the security of components that are rarely visible to the travelling public.

For passengers, the practical effect on Thursday was a return to irregular but moving service rather than a clean restart. Deutsche Bahn's messaging combined a cautious "traffic is stabilising" line with an explicit warning that delays would persist for the rest of the day. Travellers with reserved seats on long-distance services were advised to consult the DB website and station information boards before travelling.

The Bundespolizei appealed for any witnesses who may have seen suspicious activity near the Karl-Wiechert-Allee stop in the hours before the incident to come forward. No arrests had been announced by Thursday afternoon, and police did not specify how many mast anchors they believed to be missing or what the scrap value of the stolen metal might be.

The Hannover–Berlin line is one of the busiest east–west corridors in Germany, carrying intercity, regional and freight trains. Disruptions on the route routinely produce ripple effects across the wider long-distance network, and Thursday's episode followed that pattern, with knock-on delays reported on routes that do not directly touch Hannover.
