Erfurt is the most satisfied major city in Germany in the current Happiness Atlas, while Berlin lands in 35th place and Rostock comes in last.
In the current Happiness Atlas, compiled by the University of Freiburg in cooperation with the Süddeutsche Klassenlotterie (SKL), Erfurt takes first place among Germany's 40 largest cities with more than 200,000 inhabitants, with a score of 7.74 on the satisfaction index. Augsburg in Bavaria and Düsseldorf in North Rhine-Westphalia follow in the next places. The Thuringian state capital, with around 215,000 inhabitants, is described in the study as the prime example of a quiet major city in eastern Germany.
