Starting with the 2026/27 school year, a ban on Islamic head coverings for girls under 14 comes into force at public and private schools in Austria. At the same time, new rules for suspensions with mandatory support apply.
The new school year brings two clearly visible changes in Austria. On the one hand, a ban on head coverings that "veil the head according to Islamic traditions" is introduced for girls under 14. The regulation applies at both public and private schools and concerns only this age group.
On the other hand, new provisions for suspensions come into force. According to the available information, 2,440 suspensions have been recorded for the coming school year. In the future, students should receive pedagogical support after a school expulsion in order to structure the time outside of class and facilitate their return.
