A climate expert from the University of Graz has called for mandatory protective measures for nursing homes and other at-risk groups in light of increasing heatwaves.
Gabriel Bachner from the Wegener Center at the University of Graz made clear in a conversation with the APA that heatwaves must be taken seriously as extreme weather events. "Eine Hitzewelle ist kein schönes Wetter, sondern ein Extremwetterereignis - genauso wie ein Hochwasser," said Bachner, thereby underscoring the urgency of the issue.
The expert pointed out that elderly people and those in need of care in nursing facilities are particularly vulnerable. High temperatures can quickly lead to health problems in this group, such as dehydration, circulatory collapse, or heatstroke, which is why preventive structures are necessary.
