Heat Record in Vienna: 39.9 Degrees in Stammersdorf – 40-Degree Mark Within Reach

June Record Already Fallen on Saturday

Already on Saturday, the old June all-time record (38.6 degrees) had been utterly shattered – 39.3 degrees were measured in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg (Lower Austria). This brings the Austria-wide all-time record of 40.5 degrees within reach. According to GeoSphere Austria, the 40-degree mark could be broken in Vienna for the first time on Monday. Accordingly, Monday will still be hot with up to 40 degrees. In the east, extreme temperatures of up to 42 degrees are threatening.

No Cooling Even at Night

Extreme values were also recorded at other measuring stations on Sunday. Tulln/Langenlebarn reached 39.8 degrees, Bad Deutsch-Altenburg 38.1 degrees, Tulln-Langenlebarn 38.0 degrees, Vienna-Hohe Warte 37.9 degrees, Vienna-Innere Stadt 38 degrees, and Gumpoldskirchen 37.5 degrees. According to the Unwetterzentrale, the temperature did not drop below 25 degrees at three weather stations in the country. Vienna's City recorded a minimum of 25.7 degrees, Hornstein in Burgenland as much as 26.2 degrees, and Bad Deutsch-Altenburg recorded a low of 25.2 degrees.

The heat stress also affected bodies of water. The Alte Donau in Vienna currently measures a water temperature of 29.6 degrees. At Lake Neusiedl, the water temperature had already risen to 32 degrees on Saturday evening.

In addition to the all-time heat record of 40.5 degrees Celsius, which is shaky today, new June records are expected in Carinthia and East Tyrol.

Recommendations for Protection from the Heat

Due to the extreme temperatures, authorities and weather services are issuing specific behavioral recommendations. The Unwetterzentrale advises staying in the shade as much as possible, especially between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., and moving physical activities to the cooler morning or evening hours. When it comes to clothing, one should opt for linen, cotton, or silk. These fabrics are breathable, absorb moisture, and promote air circulation, leading to natural cooling. Wear a hat, cap, or cloth outdoors. Drink enough: two to three liters per day, more during physical exertion. Keep feet in cold water, place a damp cloth on the neck. Those who must get by without air conditioning at home should close the windows during the day and darken the rooms. Pay attention to nutrition: steamed vegetables, grain salads made from bulgur, couscous, or millet, tofu skewers, or soups are ideal.

Severe Thunderstorms Expected in the West

In the afternoon, starting around midday, powerful cumulus clouds will form fairly widespread in Western Austria. Subsequently, some, in part severe, thunderstorms are to be expected. Locally, there may also be heavy rain, hail, and individual gusty storms. In the eastern half of the country, sunshine often predominates all day, with only weak to moderate wind from east to south. In the western half of the country on Monday, sunshine often dominates at first; only in Vorarlberg and the Upper Inn Valley in Tyrol may initial shower or thunderstorm cells occur early in the morning and during the forenoon.

In the afternoon, storms will erupt originating from the mountains between the Upper Inn Valley in Tyrol and the Lungau region. In the evening, individual cells could also hit the Innviertel, the Flachgau, and Central Carinthia. The thunderstorms will then spread toward Vorarlberg and the upper Mur Valley. Isolated stragglers are possible into the early morning hours. The thunderstorm front will bring, according to GeoSphere Austria, above all extreme rain and severe gusty storms. The severe weather mostly remains in the mountainous terrain. By midnight, the weather will largely calm down.

Skyrarn Austria is also reporting about severe thunderstorms that are approaching. From the afternoon and evening onward, severe thunderstorms with hail and gusty storms are brewing up here.

The daily high temperatures will only be reached in the afternoon (between 3 and 5 p.m.), according to the Unwetterzentrale.
