The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued the highest warning level for extreme heat across numerous regions in central and southern Germany.

According to the DWD's announcement on Monday, the warning applies primarily to areas from North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate across Hesse and Thuringia to Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, and parts of Saxony. The meteorologists expect widespread temperatures significantly above 30 degrees Celsius as well as a strong heat load.

"Affected according to the warning map are primarily regions in central and southern Germany – from North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate across Hesse and Thuringia to Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, and parts of Saxony," the weather service's announcement states. The warning initially applies to today; an extension is possible.
