A heatwave with temperatures above 35 degrees is driving demand in Germany for cooling devices, mineral water and ice to record levels; mail-order retailer Otto speaks of one-third more orders than the previous peak.
The heatwave is making people in Germany sweat — and heightening the need for cooling. A survey by the Deutsche Presse-Agentur among several companies shows that fans in all sizes, paddling pools, mineral water, fruit and ice are particularly in demand. Mail-order retailer Otto reports a rush on corresponding products this week: in its online shop, "air conditioner" and "fan" were among the most searched terms.
"Die Nachfrage liege in der Spitze rund ein Drittel über dem bisherigen Höchstwert aus 2025", says an Otto spokesperson. This year, roughly four times as many air conditioners have been sold as in the same period last year. Electronics retailer MediaMarktSaturn is also reporting strong demand for fans and air conditioners; ice-cream machines are likewise very popular. The company advises customers not to wait too long before buying, as manufacturers' capacities are limited and additional devices can only be reordered to a limited extent.
