Paris, 22 June 2026

An intense heatwave sweeping Western Europe has broken June temperature records in France, Spain and the UK, prompted red alerts in at least four countries, and contributed to multiple deaths including two young children found in a car in southern France, officials said on Monday.

France's national weather service, Météo-France, confirmed that the country recorded its highest ever average temperature for the month of June, with a national mean of daytime and nighttime readings reaching 29.2 degrees Celsius. The previous night was the warmest June night since records began, the service said, with overnight lows of 25.3°C in Bordeaux and 24.2°C in Paris.
