Spain's weather service Aemet has issued the highest red heat alert level for parts of the three eastern regions of Aragon, Catalonia, and Valencia due to expected temperatures of up to 42 degrees Celsius.
According to Aemet, the red alert level means that the high temperatures can potentially have "sehr ernste Auswirkungen" on the health and property of the affected population. Affected are parts of the regions of Aragon, Catalonia, and Valencia "with beaches and cities popular with tourists such as Barcelona," the weather service announced. Spain's neighboring country France is also suffering from the current heatwave.
For Tuesday, the French weather service Météo-France issued the second-highest orange alert level for 61 departments. Temperatures of 35 to 41 degrees were expected, with the highest temperatures in the southwest. The heatwave is expected to last until at least Thursday.
France on Alert
The heatwave in Southern Europe is the second severe stress test for the region within a short period. In previous summers, extreme temperatures and prolonged drought had significantly increased the risk of forest fires in Southern Europe.
