U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth will address Asia’s premier defense summit in Singapore on Saturday, with his speech on the Trump administration’s Indo-Pacific strategy expected to signal a potential shift in tone on Taiwan.

The Shangri-La Dialogue, now in its 23rd edition, brings together defense ministers, military chiefs, diplomats, and security analysts from around the world. China’s rapid military modernization and growing assertiveness in the region are top issues on the agenda.

Hegseth’s remarks come only about two weeks after U.S. President Donald Trump held meetings with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Following those talks, Trump called Xi a “great leader” and said the two nations would have a “fantastic future together.”
