Trump’s Taiwan Comments Loom Over Speech

Trump also raised questions about Washington’s willingness to defend Taiwan, describing a new $14 billion arms package for the island that he has yet to approve as “a very good negotiating chip for us” with China. The U.S. currently supplies Taiwan with modern aircraft, missiles, and other weapons under a policy of “strategic ambiguity” regarding potential military intervention.

According to the Pentagon, Hegseth’s speech will focus on the military’s “common-sense approach to safeguarding U.S. vital national interests in the Indo-Pacific.” Analysts will be watching closely for any departure from traditional U.S. language on Taiwan.

Lam identified a changing world order where “might was right,” the erosion of globalization, and a loss of trust among countries as reinforcing dangers.

“This is the world’s most dynamic centre of growth, but also a theatre of intense strategic competition, a region defined by vital maritime routes, yet fraught with risk at sea,” Lam said. He called the crisis of strategic trust “a silent yet dangerous crisis” that causes states to interpret actions through mistrust and anxiety.

Lam urged a strategic framework for trust-building, stating, “Precisely because it is where these challenges converge, the Asia-Pacific must also become where solutions emerge.” His address reflected Vietnam’s delicate balancing act between Washington and Beijing.

Recently leaked documents revealed that even after Vietnam elevated diplomatic relations with Washington to the highest level, its military remained skeptical of American intentions and had taken steps to defend against a possible American “war of aggression.”

The U.S. is Vietnam’s largest export destination and has been seeking to expand defense contracts to pull market share away from Hanoi’s traditional partner, Russia. Lam was expected to keep his address focused on using consensus to manage differences and working jointly on regional stability.

Regional Balancing Act and Global Conflicts

China is due to open Sunday’s dialogue with its own view, though Beijing is sending only a lower-level delegation this year, according to Chinese media reports. Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun also did not attend last year’s event.

While the conference tilts toward Asian security issues, the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East remain unavoidable topics. The Iran conflict has led to the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world’s oil is shipped in peacetime, causing global oil prices to spike.

Qatar’s minister of defense is among the speakers scheduled for the weekend, as economic problems from the energy disruption ripple around the world.
