Helicopter crash in Sehmatal: Pilot dies at the scene

The German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation (BFU) was called in to clarify the cause of the crash. Such investigations usually take several months, as wreckage must be secured, technical data evaluated, and witnesses interviewed.

BFU takes over investigation

The crash occurred in a heavily forested region near the city of Chemnitz. The Erzgebirge is known for its dense coniferous forests and in parts difficult-to-access terrain, which can make firefighting and recovery operations more difficult.

According to Auerswald, the rapid response of the fire brigades prevented the fire from spreading beyond the immediate crash site into the forest floor and the surrounding stands. The exact condition of the affected Neudorf forestry district is still being investigated.

The pilot could not be saved despite rescue measures being initiated immediately. Nothing has been made public about his identity.

Identity of the pilot still unknown

The BFU is asking witnesses who observed the crash to come forward. Information can be submitted through the authority's usual channels.

The incident triggered dismay in the region. Residents reported that the helicopter had shown problems shortly after takeoff or during its landing approach. Individual eyewitness accounts are currently being examined by the BFU.

Investigations underway

Emergency crews from the surrounding fire brigades were at the accident site within a few minutes after the crash. They extinguished the flames around the wreckage and secured the area to prevent the fire from spreading to the Neudorf forestry district.

The authorities have so far provided no information about the type of helicopter and the purpose of the flight. The BFU also did not wish to speculate about the possible cause – technical defect, external influences, or human error.

The Chemnitz public prosecutor's office was involved after the accident, as in fatal accidents it is routinely examined whether there is any criminally relevant conduct. The results of this review are pending.

The recovery of the wreckage is scheduled to take place in the coming days. Only then can BFU specialists examine the wreckage more closely and narrow down possible technical causes.
