Leitl sees room for improvement

Several players who had attracted attention during the weeks of preparation were given playing time. Among others, Josip Brekalo, Ragnar Ache, Marius Bülter and Sebastian Grönning featured in the Berlin lineup. The mix of experienced players and new faces is expected to prove an important building block over the course of the season, especially since the squad does not yet look fully settled ahead of the start.

Köln, which as a Bundesliga relegated side also faces a difficult task in the upcoming season, presented itself as a solid friendly opponent. The cathedral city side offered Hertha the necessary resistance without descending into an open slugfest. The result therefore remained acceptable for both sides in the end, even though neither coach rated the draw as the ideal outcome.

Looking ahead to the opener in Bochum

For the Berlin side, attention now turns to the competitive season opener. One week after the friendly, VfL Bochum will host the team from the capital on Friday evening at 8:30 p.m. Every point will then count for Hertha BSC in the battle for the targeted promotion to the Bundesliga.

Leitl had deliberately used the final warm-up to try out various tactical options. During the training camp of recent weeks, the coach had placed great emphasis on pressing and quick transitions. Against Köln, that was visible in phases, but it was not enough to seriously trouble the opposing goalkeeper.

Fans' expectations ahead of the new season

The Berlin supporters followed the match with mixed feelings. After disappointing years in the second division of late, expectations for the new season are high. The first outing in Bochum becomes all the more important, as it will show how well the team has already implemented its coach's instructions.

Leitl himself assessed the preparation as decent overall, but pointed out that the decisive weeks are still to come. "Wir wissen, was wir können, und wir wissen, woran wir arbeiten müssen", said the coach with an eye on the season opener. Those in charge at the Berlin club hope that the final warm-up has been taken as a last warning shot.
