Berlin, August 5, 2026

Second-division side Hertha BSC has named Josip Brekalo as their new team captain, settling the succession of Fabian Reese, as the club announced on the day before the season opener at VfL Bochum.

According to the club, the decision was made on the day before the first competitive match of the new season. Brekalo takes on the captain's role previously held by Reese. Reese had left Hertha BSC, leaving the club's decision-makers to choose a successor from the current squad.

The club is thus placing its trust in a player with top-flight experience. Brekalo was a fixture in Berlin's play last season and is now expected to take on responsibility as a leader on the pitch. Hertha coach Stefan Leitl had recently stressed on several occasions that he wants a clear hierarchy within the team.
