Hezbollah Sees US-Iran Ceasefire as Also Binding for Lebanon

Lebanese President Aoun welcomed the agreement. Those around him said the agreement recognized that stabilizing Lebanon was important for security throughout the region. At the same time, Aoun demanded that the US-Iran agreement must end the spiral of violence.

Despite the existing ceasefire, Israel and Hezbollah, which operates from Lebanon, have been engaged in fighting for months. Israel Disagrees: No Troop Withdrawal

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced that Israeli forces would not withdraw from the occupied areas in southern Lebanon for the time being. This contradicts Hezbollah's reading, according to which the ceasefire must include an immediate withdrawal.

On Monday, according to eyewitness accounts, drones – allegedly Israeli – once again circled over the Lebanese capital, Beirut. The situation remained tense, although heavy fighting initially did not materialize.

Uncertain Future of the Ceasefire

It is so far unclear whether the US and Iran will succeed in getting their respective allies to abide by the ceasefire. Hezbollah belongs to the Shia militias closely allied with Tehran. From the Israeli side, a willingness to withdraw has so far not been signaled.

The Hezbollah militia described the agreement as the result of Iranian negotiations and tied its consent to concrete conditions: a complete Israeli withdrawal and the return of detained prisoners. As long as these demands are not met, it said it reserved the right of self-defense.
