High Forest Fire Risk in Austria and Europe – Temperatures and Drought Fuel the Situation

Why the Situation Is Currently So Risky

In Austria, the elevated risk affects several regions. Reports of a tense situation have come in from Styria and Upper Austria, among others. Places such as Weyer in the border area between the two federal states are particularly in focus, as fires on open terrain and on alpine pastures such as the Schüttbauernalm have been recorded there repeatedly in recent years.

Authorities and fire services have stepped up their warnings. In affected municipalities, calls are in effect to avoid entering forest areas whenever possible, to strictly avoid open fires, and to use agricultural machinery with caution. Hikers and campers are also asked to stick to designated trails and follow posted guidance.

Affected Regions in Austria

Across Europe, a similar picture is emerging. In several southern European countries, emergency services have had to extinguish fires repeatedly in recent weeks, sometimes supported by firefighting aircraft from other EU states. Climate change is considered by many experts to be the driver of this development, as heat waves are occurring more frequently and lasting longer.

Little relief is expected in the coming days. Temperatures will remain high, with only isolated precipitation in sight. This further increases the likelihood of additional fires, particularly in areas with a thick layer of litter or in hard-to-access mountain regions, where firefighting vehicles can only make slow progress.

High Forest Fire Risk Across Europe as Well

The responsible authorities stress that the forest fire risk must be taken seriously. Every individual can help contain the danger by following the rules of conduct and immediately reporting any suspicious smoke developments via the emergency numbers. In most federal states, fire services are also operating at an elevated state of readiness.

The current warning is part of a series of similar alerts from previous years. Long-lasting dry phases, which keep the fire risk elevated for weeks, are occurring with increasing frequency in Austria. In the longer term, discussions are therefore also under way about improved forest management, more firebreaks, and stronger early-warning infrastructure.

What the Authorities Recommend

For the coming weeks, experts advise regularly checking the official warnings issued by the weather service and the state fire service associations. In the event of acute smoke development, the rule is: keep your distance, alert the fire service, and do not attempt to fight the fire yourself.

The situation remains tense but manageable, as long as no major fires break out. Should the situation worsen, further official measures – up to and including access bans for certain forest areas – are to be expected.
