The incident occurred in the Berlin locality of Friedrichshain, which belongs to the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg borough. The nearby S-Bahn station Ostbahnhof is one of the capital's most heavily frequented hubs. The fire department provided no information on possible impacts on traffic.

According to eyewitness accounts reported by residents, the smoke spread across several blocks. The Berlin Police closed off access roads to the fire site to allow emergency vehicles clear passage. Emergency medical services were on scene with several ambulances.

The Berlin public transport operator (BVG) also provided information on possible disruptions in the surrounding area.
