A high-rise used as a warehouse belonging to the former Svit shoe factory in the Czech city of Zlin caught fire on Thursday and partially collapsed.
Factory high-rise number 34 had been built between 1949 and 1955 as the central warehouse of the then Svit shoe factory, the Bata works nationalized by the Communists. As reported by the CTK agency, a major fire broke out in the building on Thursday, during which parts of the house collapsed. Zlin lies around 250 kilometers southeast of Prague and has been regarded for decades as the center of the Czech shoe industry.

According to the fire department, around 300 emergency personnel were deployed to fight the flames. The firefighting operations proved difficult because the building threatened to collapse rapidly in the unusually hot summer for the region. Residents were asked to keep windows and doors closed because thick smoke drifted across the city area.
