A family of four on vacation from Germany got into a mountain emergency situation on the Naggleralm in Techendorf on Tuesday afternoon at around 3:10 p.m. when they were caught off guard by sudden heavy rain and severe gale-force winds during their descent into the valley.

As the Carinthia State Police Directorate announced, the 44-year-old father of the family, in search of the right path, had tried to guide the group down into the valley using a smartphone navigation app. However, the application led the hikers onto a trail that runs directly along the local lift line. As a result, the family ended up on rough and slippery terrain that became increasingly dangerous in the approaching storm.
