Indictment: Failing Investments and Crypto Gains

The 48-year-old, who also works under the name Carl Erik Rinsch, came onto Hollywood's radar in 2013 with the fantasy action film "47 Ronin." Keanu Reeves starred in the samurai film. However, the planned series for Netflix never got beyond its earliest stages.

Instead of using the money for production, according to the prosecution and witnesses, Rinsch purchased five Rolls-Royce vehicles, a red Ferrari, watches and clothing worth $652,000, as well as mattresses and luxury bedding totaling $295,000. Two mattresses alone reportedly came to $638,000. With part of the sum, he also paid off credit card bills of approximately 1.8 million dollars.

According to the prosecution and witness testimony, Rinsch lost about half of the eleven million dollars within a few months through failed investments. The rest, according to reports, he invested in cryptocurrencies and transferred profits to his own bank account.

During the trial, prosecutor David Markewitz painted a picture of a man driven by "sheer greed." Rinsch had enjoyed "every conceivable advantage," including family wealth, an elite education, famous friends, and a steep career trajectory. The prosecution had requested five years; the court came in below that at two and a half.

Defense attorney Daniel McGuinness announced after the hearing that they were "looking forward to the appeals process with confidence." Rinsch himself told the court that his behavior was attributable to mental health issues and difficulties with his medication. He apologized and said: "This trial has forced me to confront aspects of my health, my judgment, and my life."

Outcome Open: Appeal Announced

In a letter before sentencing, Hollywood star Keanu Reeves, who once worked with Rinsch on "47 Ronin," urged leniency. Reeves wrote that he did not know the details of the case but pointed to Rinsch's tendency to "self-sabotage by grossly inflating the scale, scope, and dimensions of what was originally agreed upon." At the same time, he praised the defendant as a person who brings "extraordinary joy and warmth to the people around him."

Judge Rakoff accepted these arguments only in part. While the mental health issues could "explain some of the excesses," this changes nothing about the verdict: Rinsch had "deliberately lied to obtain substantial sums from Netflix, and then lied to cover it up." The prison sentence must begin in September.

The case had already made headlines in 2020 when Netflix filed a lawsuit to recover payments. The conviction came as part of proceedings ongoing since December. The appeal is expected to be decided in the coming months.
