U.S. film director Carl Rinsch was sentenced on Monday in New York to two and a half years in prison for multi-million-dollar fraud against streaming service Netflix.

From Mega-Project to Luxury Purchases

Rinsch had already been found guilty in December of wire fraud and other offenses. Following the current hearing, the presiding U.S. District Judge Jed S. Rakoff announced the sentence. The court also ordered approximately eleven million dollars in restitution. Netflix declined to comment on the verdict.

The background is an unfinished science fiction series titled "White Horse." Netflix had initially paid Rinsch around 44 million dollars for the project in 2018 and 2019. When he stated he needed additional funds to complete it, the streaming service transferred another approximately eleven million dollars in 2020. According to the indictment, Rinsch diverted this money to a private account.
