Hong Kong, June 12, 2026

Customs authorities in the Chinese Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong have seized more than 230,000 counterfeit World Cup items with an estimated market value of 156 million Hong Kong dollars (approximately 17.2 million euros) ahead of the start of the FIFA World Cup.

As customs announced on Friday, the operation ran between May 26 and June 10. During this period, investigators found counterfeit goods in 34 cases. Among them were tens of thousands of counterfeit jerseys, as well as football boots and goalkeeper gloves. Overall, the authority estimated the market value at 156 million Hong Kong dollars (approximately 17.2 million euros).

Citing customs, the South China Morning Post reported that 80 percent of the goods were believed to have been destined for the American continent, where the World Cup will be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The authority assumed that many of them were intended for further export rather than for sale in Hong Kong. Some of the counterfeit jerseys were offered online.
