A man has been holding an employee hostage in a Rewe supermarket in Berlin's Marienfelde district since late Friday evening; police say they have been in contact with him for hours and have cordoned off the store over a wide area.

The operation began shortly after 10 p.m. on Friday evening. As police spokesperson Stefan Petersen-Schümann told rbb in the early hours of Saturday morning, the perpetrator took a woman in the store under his control and threatened her. Police are classifying the incident as a hostage situation.

„Der Einsatz dauert an", Petersen-Schümann said on Saturday at around 4:30 a.m. At around 5:30 a.m., a police spokesperson confirmed to the Deutsche Presse-Agentur: „Der Mann ist noch mit der Frau im Supermarkt, wir sind weiterhin vor Ort." Later, he added in an interview with rbb: „Wir haben Kontakt zu dem Geiselnehmer, zu dem Mann."
