Berlin, 28 May 2026

A large-scale police operation is underway at Berlin's Tempelhofer Feld on Thursday after a person was reportedly seen with a weapon or an object resembling a firearm.

The Berlin police confirmed the deployment on the online platform X, stating there was a "suspicion of a dangerous situation." Authorities said their officers are visibly present at the scene and are assessing the situation.

"Our emergency services are already visibly on site and are checking the situation," the police wrote. Several access points to the former airport grounds have been cordoned off as a precaution.

A police spokesperson later clarified that so far, "our emergency services have not identified any concrete danger." The initial alert was triggered after a witness reported seeing a person with a weapon or a "firearm-like object."

Witness Report Triggers Alert

More than 100 police officers have been deployed to the area, which is a popular recreational space in the German capital. The operation has drawn significant attention due to the park's size and its usual role as a leisure destination for families, cyclists, and skaters.

The Tempelhofer Feld, a former airport turned public park, covers over 300 hectares. Its vast, open landscape presents unique challenges for a search operation of this kind.

Nearby areas, including sections of the Volkspark Hasenheide and a volleyball court, have also been affected by the police presence. Authorities have urged the public to avoid the restricted zones until the all-clear is given.

Special Units Mobilized

In response to the developing situation, the Berlin State Criminal Police Office (LKA) activated its special unit "Ferrum" – Latin for "iron." The unit is typically deployed for complex, high-risk operations requiring specialized tactical coordination.

The Berlin Public Prosecutor's Office has also established a new investigative team, code-named "Telum" (Latin for "weapon" or "projectile"), to handle the legal aspects of the case should an investigation become necessary.

Despite the heavy police presence and the ongoing search, authorities have emphasized that no shots have been fired and no injuries have been reported. The operation remains focused on locating and identifying the individual in question.

No Confirmed Threat So Far

The police have not yet provided a description of the person they are searching for, nor have they specified what type of weapon may have been involved. The situation remains dynamic, and further updates are expected as the search continues.

The Tempelhofer Feld has been the scene of various security incidents in the past, though large-scale deployments of this nature are relatively rare. The park's open-access policy and its popularity make it a sensitive location for public safety operations.

Berlin's interior authorities have been informed of the operation, and police are coordinating with local officials to manage the impact on residents and visitors. Public transport links near the park have not been disrupted so far.
