New Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar announced in Budapest on Monday the initiation of proceedings to impeach President Tamás Sulyok, after a resignation ultimatum set by him expired on Sunday.
An almost two-hour conversation without result
Speaking at a press conference in front of Sándor Palace, the president's official residence, Magyar stated that his government would not use existing rules for impeachment but intended to introduce a constitutional amendment specifically for this purpose. "We will make the necessary decisions promptly," said the head of government, without revealing further details at first.
Earlier, the Prime Minister, accompanied by Justice Minister Márta Görög, had visited the Presidential Palace on Buda Castle Hill on Monday morning. The almost two-hour closed-door conversation apparently brought no rapprochement.
