The Hungarian Parliament on Monday passed a constitutional amendment with 139 votes, clearing the way for the removal of President Tamás Sulyok.
Background: Sulyok and Magyar's Allegations
The amendment was introduced by Prime Minister Péter Magyar, who leads his center-right party Tisza. Following the parliamentary vote, Magyar gave the head of state a five-day deadline to countersign. Sulyok had previously described Magyar's allegations as "incomprehensible and unconstitutional."
Magyar had already indicated in June that he intended to seek Sulyok's removal from office. He argued that Sulyok had suffered a "severe loss of trust." Sulyok was supposed to safeguard the democratic functioning of the state, the new prime minister said: "But he did nothing at all."
